Located at the heart of the European institutions, the Microsoft Executive Briefing Center welcomes organisations from Europe, the Middle East and Africa for strategic discussions with government officials, public-sector and commercial organisations.
The challenge
Scanning a busy corporate event space meant careful time and space management, working around meetings and visitors without disturbing the venue.
The solution
A complete Matterport 3D digital twin of the center, with a 3D floor plan and a photo set. Microsoft's team used the tour to give future visitors a virtual look at the facility and plan their day before they arrive.
How we built a digital twin
A digital twin is a measurable, navigable 3D copy of a real place. We captured the Executive Briefing Center position by position with a professional 3D scanning camera that combines infrared depth sensing with 360° HDR photography.
- 01
Infrared depth sensing
At each scan position the camera turns a full 360°. Its infrared sensors project an invisible pattern onto walls, floors and furniture, then read how it bends to measure the distance to every surface. Each turn records hundreds of thousands of depth points.
- 02
360° HDR photography
During the same rotation, high resolution lenses shoot several exposures in every direction. They are merged into HDR images, so bright windows and darker corners keep their detail.
- 03
Alignment and reconstruction
Scan positions every two metres or so are aligned automatically by matching their geometry. The depth data becomes a textured 3D mesh, accurate to about one percent, with the photos mapped onto it.
- 04
The digital twin
The result is a faithful copy of the space. Visitors walk through it freely, switch to a dollhouse view of the whole floor, open the floor plan and take measurements.
Why it matters
Visit before you arrive
Guests explore every room from their browser, so they know the space and can plan their day before they walk in.
Plan events remotely
Event teams check layouts, seating and screen positions without a site visit, from Brussels or from the other side of Europe.
Measure from your desk
Distances, heights and surfaces can be measured directly in the model for furniture, signage or installations.
One capture, many outputs
The same scan produces the walkthrough, a 3D floor plan, high resolution stills and fly-through videos like the one above.
No disruption on site
Scanning was scheduled around live meetings and visitors. The space stayed fully operational the whole time.
Always on, everywhere

At the Microsoft Briefing Center we use the 3D Showcase to give potential visitors a virtual look into the facility. We go over all the areas and explain how the day can be planned.
